Founders and Facilitators

Cynthia Winton-Henry and Phil PorterNational InterPlay Founders

Cynthia Winton-Henry and Phil Porter are philosophers, speakers, teachers, and performers. They have collaborated as colleagues, teaching and performing for 22 years. They began developing the InterPlay practice and philosophy in 1989 and have been sharing it around the world ever since. They are co-directors of the non-profit organization Body Wisdom, Inc., based in Oakland, California, which also encompasses InterPlay in Organizations and WING IT! Performance Ensemble.

Cynthia and Phil have written and published several books: Body & Soul: Excursions in the Realm of Physicality and Spirituality; Poems and Prayer & Exhortations; and The Wisdom of the Body. They have performed countless concerts including God, Sex & Power; and Fear and Abandon. They have produced their community-based concert The Unbelievable Beauty of Being Human in San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Raleigh, and Sydney, Australia. Their books and videotapes are available from WING IT! Press.

They have lectured, taught, and performed throughout the United States and in other parts of the world, including Bangkok and Sydney. InterPlayers are all over, including a large group of people who have been trained in the InterPlay Leadership Program. Cynthia and Phil will be visiting Texas, the newest InterPlay region, in October, 2003. (Need link to information about their visit here.)

Sheila Collins

Sheila K. Collins is the director of InterPlay Texas, an organization established to organize, coordinate, produce, and direct InterPlay activities in the State of Texas. Sheila describes herself as a “dancing social worker”. A former professional dancer, she has taught social work at three universities and co-founded and directed a behavioral health care clinic in Fort Worth Texas. Sheila is the author of numerous articles and the book, "Stillpoint: The Dance of Selfcaring, Selfhealing".

Sheila has played, studied, and worked with Cynthia Winton-Henry and Phil Porter, the founders of InterPlay since 1993. Sheila teaches InterPlay in clinics, churches, retreat centers and prisons and directs Wing & A Prayer Players, an InterPlay performing group. A 'recovering serious person', Sheila finds the tools and spiritual discipline of InterPlay most helpful in getting through life's ordinary, and extraordinary, "tough stuff."

Melinda McClain

Melinda V. McLain is a certified InterPlay leader, musician, actor, writer, dancer, pastor and poet living in San Francisco. Melinda has been involved in InterPlay since 1992, serving at various times as teacher, performer, and stage manager. Recently Melinda has been spending extended time in Austin, leading a monthly play group. She is delighted to find new playmates in Texas! In addition to leading InterPlay classes, Melinda especially loves to improvise on the keyboard, accompanying InterPlay classes and performances.

Beverly Voss
Convener - Austin

Beverly Voss is a licensed social worker with a private practice in Austin. She teaches workshops on Creative Journaling and Expressive Painting and on applying InterPlay in the field of mental health . For her own enjoyment and the delight of her friends she writes poetry, gardens and dances. A recent graduate of the InterPlay Leadership Program, Beverly is a convener for Interplay in the Austin community.

Suzanne Armistead
Convener - Austin

Suzanne Armistead is a professional self-expression artist, teacher, and creativity coach. Suzanne has studied, performed, and taught expressive dance for 30 years. Her studies have included the Bob Hope School of the Arts at SMU, Gabrielle Roth and the Five Rhythms, Body Psychology with Stuart Heller, and Jacques D'Amboise’s National Dance Institute.

Suzanne currently works with partners, Nathalie Sorrell and Carol Waid in their organization, Truth Be Told, presenting transformational seminars to women in prison. A recent graduate of the InterPlay Leadership Program, Suzanne is a convener for Interplay in Austin where she lives with her husband, son, and pet ferret.

Elizabeth Lane
InterPlay Leader, Houston

Elizabeth Lane is a graduate of the InterPlay Leadership program which she completed while a student at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkley, CA. She has currently returned to PSR to complete her studies, planning to return to Houston in June for a second year as a chaplain intern at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston.  Elizabeth has provided some of the initial energy to initiate an InterPlay community in the Houston area.
